Inflating the chassis doesn’t mean better battery life, but it does help performance. The ultra-thin design of the 15-inch MacBook Pro provided adequate performance in 2016, but the first Core i9 processors were announced earlier in 2018, and suddenly presented new capabilities for laptops. Both chips can handle almost all tasks, from simple web browsing to demanding production workloads like video editing and 3D rendering. The CPU performance is similar between the two chips, so choosing between the M1 Pro and M1 Max depends on whether you need the extra GPU cores, memory bandwidth, or video encoding and decoding engines.
I never minded hauling around the extra weight and dimensions, and I spend about half the time somewhere on the road. When I am ready to buy again it will be back to the 15″ for sure. I decided with this model of Mac weighing more and being a little thicker the 14” will be nicer to travel with. Some choices for the MacBook Pro 16 are relatively easy to make, while others depend a lot on your circumstances. Most people are unlikely to need as much as 64GB of RAM, so having to pay $800 is a rare case. But whatever you go for, make sure it’s the right amount for you.
The M1 Pro with 16 GPU cores likely won’t reach 60fps even at minimum graphical settings, but it’ll still be playable because Civilization VI is a turn-based game that doesn’t require fast reaction times. The Apple MacBook Pro’s performance in Borderlands 3 is sub-par. It can’t reach an average of 60fps at 1080p with high graphical settings, and there are some noticeable stutters, which isn’t ideal for an FPS game that requires precise aiming. You have to turn the settings down to minimum to get close to 60fps. The game will likely be near unplayable on the M1 Pro models with 16 GPU cores, with the average frame rate hovering in the 20s.
Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software and the X-Rite i1 Pro 2 spectrophotometer shows that the panel calibration of the new MBP 16 is not as good compared to the 14-inch unitout of the box. The color temperature is slightly too cool and there is a minor blue cast in the grayscale. Unfortunately, we are not able to calibrate the panel with our device. Both the average DeltaE-2000 deviations for the colors as well as the grayscale are already smaller than 3 though, so this is moaning on a very high level and there are no restrictions for picture/video editing. Apple manages a pixel density of 255 ppi, both for the 14 as well as the 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Since the display is obviously larger, the resolution is higher as well.
Its bigger chassis allows for a larger touchpad, better-sounding speakers, and more effective cooling on the SoC, leading to better performance over time. The MacBook Pro 16 has Municipalite Godbout longer battery life for productivity, but it doesn’t last as long for video playback. As for the configurations, the MacBook Pro 14 has a lower-end M1 Pro option with 8 CPU cores and 14 GPU cores that isn’t available on the 16 inch model.
The Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 and the Apple MacBook Pro 16 are very different laptops. The Lenovo is a 2-in-1 convertible designed for light productivity tasks, while the Apple is a more powerful clamshell laptop designed for demanding tasks like video editing. The Apple has a larger display with better color accuracy out of the box, a bigger touchpad with better tracking, and a webcam with better video quality.
I do find rendering video a whole lot faster with the M1 / M1Pro. However, when we set the texture quality to very high on the MacBook Pro , the MacBook Pro’s frame rate dropped to a comparable 19.6 fps. Apple includes a fairly robust 512GB of SSD storage in the starting configuration and 1TB in the $2,799 model. But you can configure the 16-inch MacBook Pro with up to an 8TB SSD. As someone who commutes on a crowded bus for nearly two hours each way , I was pretty shocked that I could work on this system without pissing off the person sitting next to me.
Nevertheless, the MacBook Pro 16 is only 16.8mm thick and weighs 2.2 kg (2.1 kg for the M1 Pro model). Needless to say, the structural integrity of the laptop is amazing, with practically zero flex from the base, and little-to-no bend from the lid. You can purchase the bags at affordable rates and enjoy the benefits of saving money and time. Its padded interior keeps your Macbook safe, while its durable exterior protects it from everyday wear and tear.
The updated design looks better with slimmer bezels and an ever-so-slightly elevated pixel density going from 220 to 226ppi. That likely won’t be a huge reason for users to upgrade though. This will matter to you a great deal, or it won’t, and even before you started reading this, you already knew if it mattered to you or not.
To be fair, this laptop is for serious creative pros with more demanding needs, like coders, video editors and game developers. That’s why it has up to an 8-core Core i9 processor, up to 64GB of RAM and up to 8TB of storage. You also get a huge 16-inch Retina display with slimmer bezels and a crazy powerful 6-speaker audio system. The M1 Max is the most powerful piece of silicon Apple’s ever put in a MacBook, and it shows. When we put our 16-inch MacBook Pro review unit and its M1 Max chip to the test in the Geekbench 5.4 multi-core performance benchmark, it earned a score of 12,683.
