The Washington Post’s fact-checker gave the claim four Pinocchios, saying the victims studied in the report were not all unarmed, and they were not all killed by the police. The group was including those who rushed and or ambushed police in their report as well as those killed by “police officers, security guards or vigilantes.” As you can imagine, the term vigilantes was loosely defined. Mr. Castro oppressed his people for 59 years, torturing and killing an estimated 15,000 of his own citizens who opposed him. His reign was so idyllic, over an eighth of the island’s population chose to go into exile, with about 700,000 coming into the U.S. prior to 1980. But that didn’t stop reporters from writing repeated stories beforehand on how great Obamacare would be, even though, the administration knew at the time they were making the statements, some health coverage would be lost.
It stars Tom Hanks as Captain Kidd and Helena Zengel as Johanna. The screenplay was rewritten by the film’s director Paul Greengrass after an original version by Luke Davies. News of the World was released theatrically by Universal Pictures in the United States on December 25, 2020, and grossed $12 million. Internationally, the film was released by Netflix in other territories on February 10, 2021.
The other great treasure to be found here is the portrait of a time and a place. A peter bescherelle frontier with an actual front, during the transition from Native American control to ouster by Europeans. Jiles offers a compelling look at the challenges faced by the invading whites , without turning a blind eye to the challenges faced by the dispossessed people. She also offers appreciation for the culture from which Johanna had been taken. Jiles uses a few methods to mark the trail the unlikely pair follows.
It simply backs up what they believe in the first place. The footage above was actually circulated online and there were claims that the people in the video were chanting, “Death to America”. The video first started making the rounds in 2016 accompanied with claims that the media was attempting to suppress its dissemination. But the video is from a protest that took place in 2014 and it was for a protest over Gaza bombings.
Johanna Leonberger has been rescued from the Kiowa Indians who four years earlier, kidnapped her and killed her immediate family. Having been so young when this event took place, she has completely forgotten the English language and has assimilated the dialect and customs of the tribe. Life becomes anything but peaceful and solitary as Captain Kidd begins a 400-mile journey through Texas with Johanna, his ten-year-old charge.
Luke Davies and Paul Greengrass have co-written the screenplay for this film, which explores the themes of trust, family, and responsibility. It was also proving lucrative enough to keep expanding. BuzzFeed News was only able to identify the existence of one site, McenziePost.com, in February. But at the end of April there were more than 20 nearly identical fake news sites.
I loved how she wove these fictional characters into a tale which brought to life this place and time in North American history. What I really loved even more was the lyrical, spare, and compassionate prose she employed. It so beautifully speaks to the heritage and lifestyle of the native tribes with its words solidly planted on the earth. Jiles is a new author for me, but in this novel she has reminded me why I love historical fiction. She has taken a little talked about time period- post reconstruction Texas- and created memorable characters within that framework who I will think about for awhile. Additionally, through Kidd’s readings and their encounters on the road, we are given the important news stories of the time, allowing this story to contain a larger historical framework.
Now at age 10, after having been rescued by the Army, she has no memory of her previous life; not family, not language, nothing. But in a good way and solely due to the authors expertise in creating two wonderful characters with a unique relationship. Captain Kidd, travels Northern Texas as a news reader, in post Civil War, Texas. He is offered a tidy sum to deliver a young girl who was captured by the Kiowa Indians when she was six, the rest of her immediate family killed in the raid.. Now ten she is traded back and needs to be returned to her aunt and uncle, her only surviving relatives.
One of these is the plight of the Kiowa people who enter the story as part of Johanna’s background. She was taken by them years earlier, but we also learn that in taking her back, white men slaughtered her adoptive family, who she remembered and loved better than her birth parents. Later, we see the downtrodden-looking journey of the Kiowa at a time when reservations are being set up for them, forcing them into little boxes on land they’d once roamed freely.
